PS3 Specs

The Sony Playstation 3 will be powered by a processor with 8 SPEs (synergistic processing elements) designed by Sony, IBM, and Toshiba, which will dwarf the speed of most Computers. The SPEs are controlled by an integrated power pc processor. The processor has been nicknamed 'the cell'. This processor working beside all of the other incorporated hardware will push the PS3 to the point of surpassing the capabilities of the XBox 360.

More Data on the Processor:

  • Observed clock speed: a wide range of operating frequencies are supported to optimize for power and yield;
  • Peak performance (single precision): > 256 GFlops (floating point operations per second)
  • Peak performance (double precision): >26 GFlops
  • Local storage size per SPU: 256KB
  • Area: 221 mm˛
  • Technology 90nm SOI
  • Total number of transistors: 234M

The graphics processor in the PS3 is an Nvidia based RSX or 'reality synthesizer' which runs at 550MHz. Nvidia has been working on this next generation GeForce GPU processor for two years. The graphics board includes 256MB of GDDR3 memory and can move data at over 22GB/s.

Sound capabilities of the new Sony are to be expectedly optimum with Dolby Digital 7.1 Surround software.

The hard drive size for the PS3 according to a Sony will come in 20GB and 60GB versions of fully upgradeable HDD. The HDD is a removable 2.5 inch drive.

System Memory on the new Playstation will by 256M XDR and will be able to move at over 20GB/s in some instances.

The PS3 comes with built in 802.11 G and B wireless capabilities in the 60GB version so connectivity to online games should be very easy if you are in an urban evrironment or have access to a wireless router. That hopefully means no extra equipment needed to start playing online.

The PS3 60 GB version will be fully HDTV compatable with resolutions ranging from 480i to 1080p. The system will enable you to support up to 2 HDTVs simultaneously at this resolution with its two HDMI outputs.

Controllers for the PS3 are Wireless Bluetooth. Typically basic bluetooth devices will transmit around 30 feet so I would expect at least a similar range. The Sony console will support up to 7 bluetooth controllers.
